Heading into college football’s third weekend, Oklahoma is clicking on all cylinders this season under the direction of Jalen Hurts at quarterback.

Are the Sooners once again on a crash course to reach the College Football Playoff with relative ease?

College GameDay’s crew put Oklahoma in its crosshairs during Saturday’s show live from Ames, Iowa.

“If you go down the list on their schedule, the only team that kept them under 40 last year was Iowa State when they came here (Ames, Iowa) and they’ve got eight starters back on defense,” Herbstreit said. “Only thing I’m enjoying more than seeing Jalen Hurts perform is watching him handle the press conferences and how locked in (he looks).

“He’s got big goals this year and what he’s trying to accomplish.”

Hurts, one of the Heisman frontrunners after a hot start, was commended for his razor-sharp focus up to this point.

“After the game the other day (against South Dakota), he was working out in the weight room, business as usual,” David Pollack said, before he touched on Oklahoma’s potentially toughest opponent. “Texas beat them a year ago with Kyler Murray as the No. 1 pick.”

Desmond Howard says there’s a late-season game on the Sooners’ slate that won’t be easy.

“We talk about rivalries … there’s nothing more the Cowboys would rather do at the end of the year in Stillwater,” Howard said. “If the Sooners are undefeated and Jalen Hurts is a strong Heisman candidate, if they could derail their season and knock them out, Mike Gundy and his boys would love that.

“Watch out for the Oklahoma State game.”

Herbstreit isn’t necessarily buying the idea of Oklahoma losing a game prior to the Big 12 Championship.

“Oklahoma State and Texas both will score with them, but nobody is stopping Jalen Hurts and that offense,” Herbstreit said.

The Sooners are a 24.5-point favorite in Saturday’s game at UCLA, another opportunity for Hurts to have a standout outing with a spotlight opportunity.

“They’re not going to win today, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they can compete and keep it close in the first half of this game,” Herbstreit said.
