BLACKSBURG, Va. — When Virginia Tech safety Devon Hunter shut things down four games into last season to develop while preserving his redshirt, he did so knowing it was going to be tough to watch his teammates go out there every week and compete on Saturdays.
He avoided home games. It was too tough to not be in the battle. He watched the road games on TV, though that, too, was difficult, especially with the Hokies’ struggles. The former touted recruit never envisioned he’d be a spectator like that in his second year of college.
When he was down, though, one guy picked him up: Justin Hamilton, who was then a director of player development on defense, but has since been promoted to be the Hokies’ safeties coach, replacing Tyrone Nix.
