BACK TO SCHOOL: Tax-free weekend

Sorry, kids, but the summer is drawing to a close, and it’s back to school time in a couple of weeks. But there are plenty of activities to enjoy before the first bell rings. The Back to School Sales Tax Holiday starts Friday and runs through Tuesday. In addition to discounts, you get extra goodies at Tyrone Square Mall’s Back to School Bash. Show receipts dated from Friday to Sunday totaling at least $250 at the mall office to get a free backpack filled with school supplies. When those run out, shoppers will receive a savings passport. Saturday, there’s a party in the Center Court from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with a fashion show of the latest trends and school uniforms from Macy’s, DJ music, face painting, arts and crafts and a cheer performance by Rock Solid Allstars. Sunday, enjoy performances from Competitive Edge Dance in the Dick’s Sporting Goods court at 1 and 3 p.m. Free. 6901 22nd Ave. N, St. Petersburg. (727) 345-0126. simon.com/mall/tyrone-square.

The sales tax holiday does have some restrictions. It only applies to the following:

• Clothing, footwear and certain accessories, $60 or less per item.

• Certain school supplies, $15 or less per item.

• Personal computers and certain related accessories, $1,000 or less per item for noncommercial home or personal use.

CHISELERS: Warehouse sale

The Chiselers, the preservation group of Henry B. Plant Hall, take donations of furniture, home decor and holiday decorations and have sales throughout the year. The group’s annual warehouse sale is billed as a back to school event. Maybe a stretch, but if you consider all the college kids who need to furnish a dorm room or apartment, it makes sense. Why fill your space with stuff you have to assemble from the big box stores? It’s much more chic to decorate with a mix of antiques. Those of us not returning to school can shop anyway. You never know what treasure you might find. Free. 9 a.m.-noon Saturday. 212 N Newport Ave., Tampa. (813) 388-5208. thechiselersinc.com.
