NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Hundreds of first-year students officially began their college careers at Tennessee State University on Freshman Move-in Day.

On Wednesday, more than 200 volunteers, including student organizations, alumni, staff and friends helped move luggage and other items into dormitories for the new residents.

Darren Evans Jr., 18, of Chicago said he is excited to have the college experience and earn a degree in Agricultural Sciences with a concentration in Food and Animal Sciences.

“It’s a really nice program. I was over there during the summer in June. I stayed over there for a whole month it was nice,” Evans Jr. said.

His parents, who already have a daughter attending Hampton University, said they will be empty-nesters when they return home.

“It’s bittersweet like I feel a little sad but I’m happy at the same time. Some days I wake up and there’s a pit in the bottom of my stomach and like today, I’m like whoo whoo it’s today! It’s back and forth. You know every day is different,” Cathena Evans.

Freshman students will have orientation for the next three days. Classes start on August 19.
