For decades, students have forked over the dough to pay for college tuition in Utah County.
With the increased focus in recent years on the rising cost of higher eduction, just how much has the cost of the two local universities increased?
We looked at tuition costs per semester, with fees included, at both BYU and UVU (which has gone through the phases of Utah Technical College, Utah Valley Community College, Utah Valley State College and, finally, Utah Valley University) over the past 50 years.
BYU’s undergraduate tuition for Latter-day Saint students has increased 1,058% since 1970. Tuition for students who aren’t members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints increased 1,444% in that time.
For graduate students at BYU, tuition for Latter-day Saints students increased by 1,358%. Tuition rates for non Latter-day Saint students increased 1,844%.
At UVU, tuition increased from the university’s days as Utah Technical college 2,810% for in-state residents and 2,581% for non-Utah residents.
In that same time frame, the U.S. median household income increased 545%, according to numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau.
