There isn’t a single mini fridge, hot plate or rollaway bed to be had anywhere in the building.

The university dorm room has undergone a serious upgrade at the new $6-million student residence that’s part of Canterbury College in west Windsor.

Kitchens feature brand new stainless steel appliances, including dishwashers, and every single resident has their own private bathroom.

The shared units have fully-stocked kitchens with utensils, dishes and small appliances as well as two full-size fridges so students each get a shelf to themselves. There’s a laundry room for each shared unit and common laundry facilities for the apartment dwellers.

Shelly Bolger, general manager of Canterbury College at the University of Windsor, is shown in one of the new dorm building’s kitchens on Tuesday, August 27, 2019.

The common living and kitchen areas are open concept and come furnished with a couch, chairs and a kitchen table set.

Students started moving into the three-storey residence on Patricia Road last week and the rest will filter in over the next few days, leaving all 32 individual apartments and five shared housing units occupied by the time classes begin next week.

Shelley Bolger, the college’s general manager, said there’s already a wait list for rooms.

Lower units are barrier free and wheelchair accessible.

“It looks amazing inside,” said 23-year-old Kolby Sarson who has lived in one of Canterbury’s homes for the past three academic years.

“The thing that honestly was the main push to getting me to move out of my old room is having an ensuite bath,” Sarson said.

Sarson will serve as a head of house in one of the shared units.

“In the old place there were nine people in the house, this will be six so I think it will be a closer-knit group as well,” the Chatham native said.

With each of the shared units housing six, the college’s total student population has jumped to 174.

The new residence takes the place of three older homes that housed 21 people. The college demolished them last year to make way for the new structure.

“I’m very pleased with the new residence design that’s in keeping with the overall Canterbury culture to provide a supportive, academic environment where students can achieve their goals,” said Gordon Drake, principal of Canterbury College.

Canterbury College has its roots in the Anglican Church and was originally tied to Assumption University. Affiliated with the University of Windsor since 1957, the college long ago moved to accept students of all nationalities and religious backgrounds.

College residents are a mix of senior or graduate students with one-third being international students representing 16 countries.

“It’s been a couple of years worth of planning,” said Bruck Easton who serves as president of the college’s board. “It’s been a long-term project and we’re very happy it has arrived.”
